The lights go black. The crowd roars. The curtain lift. Cheers. Lights start flashing, the sound of a drum being beaten. Cheers. Smoke starts to slowly drift across the floor of the stage. Five bright boxes start to rise from the large staircase at the back of the stage. The crowd goes wild. The boxes turn 180 degrees and reveal the five singers. The crowd gets even louder. They’re here. It’s finally time! The beat builds up, and stops, suddenly. “All you people can’t you see, can’t you see” echoes throughout the venue. The crowd starts singing along to their hit, ‘Larger Than Life.’ “How your love’s affecting our reality. Every time we’re down, you can make it right, that makes you larger than life.” They start descending down to the stage. I have goosebumps. Then we hear, “LAS VEGASSSSSSSS!” The crowd gets LOUD. A few minutes go by and the song ends. The crowd erupts. The show is underway!
They play all of their hits, ‘The One’, ‘Quit Playing Games’, ‘As Long As You Love Me’, ‘Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely’, ‘Incomplete’, ‘I Want It That Way’, and more.
About an hour and a half go by, and it gets quiet. The stage lights up pink with all of the male and female dancers on stage dancing for a minute or two. I’m thinking that this has to be the end, this has to be ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’. The music and beat starts to build up. “Backstreet’s back, alright!” The crowd goes wild, this is the song we’ve all been waiting for. The crowd sings along,
“Am I original? Yeahhhh.
Am I the only one? Yeahhhh.
Am I sexual? Yeahhhh.
Am I everything you need?
You better rock your body now.
Everybody, yeah. Yeahhhh.
Rock your body, yeah. Yeahhhh.
Rock your body, right.
Backstreet’s back, ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT!”
They continue on with the song, dancing and singing. Easily their best dancing of the night. It ends emphatically with a “BACKSTREET’S BACK, ALRIGHT!” The crowd goes wild, they hold hands and bow to the crowd at the front of the stage, while pink confetti drops from the ceiling. They go to mid-stage to hold hands and bow with the dancers. They then go to the top of the stairs at the back of the stage to wave and bow one more time. 5,000 strong standing – cheering, screaming, crying, clapping. What a moment. I’m so glad I got to experience this.
I love concerts. I’ve easily been to over 40 live shows, including performance from over 75 artists. This is easily top three for me. Whether you like them or not, the atmosphere was absolutely incredible.
I want to go back just to see another show – live it one more time. To the Backstreet Boys: Nick, Howie, AJ, Brian and Kevin – thank you. Backstreet is definitely back. Your fans welcome you with open arms. And trust me – we’re glad you’re back.
